2026 Durham University Global Grand Challenges Studentships Details
The Global Grand Challenges Studentships is a funding initiative launched by Durham University in 2024 to support excellent early-career researchers undertaking doctoral research linked to specific Sustainable Development Goals.
This current call focuses on SDG13: Climate Action. It supports research projects that address climate change challenges and contribute to building a more resilient global future.
Five studentships are available under this call. Successful candidates will begin their PhD in October 2026. The studentships are open across all four Faculties of Durham University, including the Business School, and applications from multidisciplinary or interdisciplinary projects are strongly encouraged.
The studentship is funded for 3.5 years on a full-time basis. Studentships cannot normally start before October 2026 and cannot be deferred beyond January 2027.
Both home and international applicants are eligible to apply.

Eligibility Requirements for the Durham University Global Grand Challenges Studentships 2026
- Applicants must not be currently registered as doctoral students
- Applicants must not be receiving any other studentship funding
- Applicants must not be in full-time employment during the studentship
- A first-class or 2:1 undergraduate degree, or comparable relevant experience
- Strong academic record and research potential
- A feasible PhD research proposal aligned with SDG13: Climate Action
- Ability to complete the PhD within 3.5 years
- International applicants must meet Durham University’s entry and English language requirements
- Applicants must be able to receive an unconditional offer by the deadline
