We Know What Rejection Feels Like

ScholarWaka was not built in a boardroom. It was built from a place of pain, persistence, and eventual breakthrough.

Lucy Ikpesu-Ewhubare, the Founder and CEO of ScholarWaka Limited, applied to over 23 international scholarships between 2017 and 2021. Chevening, the Commonwealth Shared Scholarship, the MasterCard Foundation, Türkiye Scholarships, the Swedish Institute, and many others rejected her. She reached out to over 35 professors across multiple countries seeking research support. Most never replied.

There were nights she cried. Mornings, she questioned whether the dream was even worth holding onto. But she kept going — rewriting her essays, seeking feedback, refining her approach, and trusting that the right door would eventually open.

In 2021, it did.

Lucy received a congratulations email from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. She had been selected for the Commonwealth Scholarship to study Advanced Chemical Engineering with Energy at the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom, fully funded.

That one, yes, made every no worth it.

Why ScholarWaka Exists

Lucy founded ScholarWaka because she did not want anyone else to walk that journey alone.

Most scholarship seekers in Africa and beyond are navigating a complex, competitive, and often confusing process with no real guidance. They reuse the same essays. They miss deadlines. They do not know which scholarships match their profile. They give up after a few rejections, not knowing they were closer than they thought.
