Eligibility Requirements for the MIT Knight Science Journalism Fellowship 2026

To be considered for the MIT Knight Science Journalism Fellowship 2026, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a full-time journalist; working in print, digital, audio, video, or multimedia. Freelancers are eligible if journalism is their primary source of income.
  • Have at least three consecutive years of professional experience covering science, health, technology, or environmental topics.
  • Work produced must reflect strong reporting skills, accuracy, and a clear focus on science or science-related fields.
  • Be able to take a full academic year away from daily newsroom duties, as fellows must commit fully to the nine-month residency program in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
  • Not have completed a long-term fellowship (4+ months) within the last two years prior to applying.
  • Be proficient in English, as all seminars, courses, and workshops are conducted in English.
  • Applicants from all countries are eligible, but international fellows must be able to obtain a U.S. J-1 visa if selected.
