2026 Government of Japan MEXT Scholarship Details
The MEXT (UR) Scholarship is designed for highly talented students who wish to study in Japan and contribute to international collaboration. This special category, University Recommendation, means that you cannot apply directly to MEXT; instead, you must apply to APU, which will shortlist and recommend the best candidates to MEXT.
Once recommended, candidates go through the final selection by MEXT. The scholarship not only covers your academic costs but also provides a comfortable living allowance in Japan, making it one of the most generous funding options for graduate students.

Government of Japan MEXT Scholarship 2026 Eligibility Requirements
To be considered for the 2026 Government of Japan MEXT Scholarship, you must:
- Plan to study in Japan from overseas (you must not already be living in Japan).
- Hold citizenship of a country designated by MEXT.
- Be born on or after April 2, 1991.
- Have a strong academic record — GPA of at least 2.30 on a 3.00 scale in your most recent university.
Additional Notes:
- Applicants currently in military service or civilian military employment are not eligible.
- Former MEXT scholarship recipients are generally ineligible unless they have more than three years of education or work experience since their last award, or were recipients of certain special programs.
- You must not receive another scholarship at the same time unless approved by MEXT.
- You must hold a “Student” visa while studying in Japan.
