Applications for the Al Jazeerah Fellowship 2026 are now open for interested candidates.

The Al Jazeera Media Institute Fellowship Programme is a fully-funded three-month research placement aimed at journalists and media researchers from around the world. You will remotely develop a research proposal and then spend time at Al Jazeera’s headquarters in Doha, Qatar, to complete your work, collaborate with newsroom professionals, and expand your understanding of global journalism practice.

Al Jazeerah Fellowship 2026 Details

The Al Jazeera Media Institute Fellowship supports journalists and researchers in conducting original research in areas such as journalism in the Global South, digital journalism and emerging technologies, new schools of journalism, journalistic ethics, and media institutions and challenges.

The programme runs in two phases:

  • Phase 1 (Remote): Develop your research proposal and introduction.
  • Phase 2 (On-site in Doha, Qatar): Join Al Jazeera’s newsroom environment, finish your research paper (~7,000 words), and engage with editors and media professionals.

Applications are evaluated by a committee based on fulfillment of eligibility criteria (degree, professional experience, language), relevance, and originality of the research proposal to the fellowship’s thematic areas.



Eligibility Requirements for the Al Jazeerah Fellowship 2026

To be considered for the Al Jazeera Fellowship Programme, applicants must:

  • Hold at least a Bachelor’s degree.
  • Be a full-time journalist or researcher, either as a freelancer or in employment.
  • Have a minimum of four (4) years of professional experience in journalism or research related to media and communication.
  • Possess strong research and academic writing skills.
  • Be fluent in English, both written and spoken.
  • Have a good grasp of English academic writing for research preparation and submission.
  • The English Fellowship Programme is open only to applicants from non-Arab countries. Applicants from Arab countries should apply to the Arabic Fellowship Programme instead.
