Eur-Asian 2025 Essay Competition Details

The Eur-Asian 2025 Essay Competition invites scholars, researchers, and practitioners in border studies from across the globe to share their unique perspectives on the disconnection between territory-based conceptions of world politics and the evolving dynamics of borders in today’s world, including volumetric, vertical, topological, and virtual spaces.

Hosted by Tallinn University in Estonia, this global essay competition is part of the Eur-Asian Border Lab project. It’s designed to challenge conventional thinking and explore new theoretical and practical approaches to understanding borders.

Applicants are encouraged to contribute original, thought-provoking essays that engage deeply with emerging border concepts and the power structures tied to them.

At the end of the competition, one winner and two runners-up will be selected. The winner will receive a fully funded invitation to attend the final Eur-Asian Border Lab event at Tallinn University, taking place from October 8 to 11, 2025. This includes full coverage of travel and accommodation. The winner will also have the opportunity to present their essay at the event and engage with leading voices in the field. In addition, the top three essays, including those of the two runners-up, will be featured on the Border Lab’s digital platforms, gaining international visibility and recognition.
