Details of the 2025 KAS Scholarship Program
The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) Scholarship Program supports outstanding international students and graduates pursuing postgraduate or doctoral studies in Germany. Rooted in Christian democratic values, KAS is committed to fostering democracy, strengthening the rule of law, and promoting human rights worldwide. The scholarship aims to facilitate intercultural dialogue, build international networks, and contribute to the global exchange of knowledge by supporting scholars from diverse academic fields, including law, science, medicine, and humanities.
In 2024, regional selection meetings will take place in India, Tanzania, and Colombia in collaboration with local KAS offices. Scholars are expected to study in Germany for at least four semesters and, after completing their programs, actively contribute to strengthening relations between their home country and Germany. With scholars from 55 countries, KAS continues to advance global academic excellence and cooperation.
Eligibility Requirements for the 2025 KAS Scholarship Program
To be eligible for the KAS Scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Hold a university degree (KAS does not support bachelor’s studies).
- Demonstrate above-average academic performance in their field of study.
- Have a B2-level proficiency in the German language.
- Be actively engaged in voluntary work.
- Plan to study for a minimum of four semesters at a German university.
- Possess a broad general education and a strong interest in political issues.
- Show a commitment to democracy and human rights.
- Be open to developing their perspectives and practicing tolerance.
- Be highly motivated with a clear vision for their future and the ability to convincingly present their goals.
Further Specifications
- Medical and Pharmacy students can only apply after completing their intermediate exam in Germany or reaching a comparable stage in their studies.
- Specialist training or postgraduate research stays in human or dental medicine are not supported.
- Individuals who have already obtained a doctoral degree are not eligible for this scholarship.
Benefits
The scholarship provides:
Financial Assistance
- Master’s and postgraduate students receive a monthly stipend of €992 for up to two years.
- PhD students receive a monthly stipend of €1,400 for up to three years, provided they have unconditional admission to a German university.
- Research stays in Germany of at least three semesters are also funded.
- Additional financial support includes:
- Health insurance subsidy of up to €120 per month.
- Family allowance of €276 per month (for scholars living with their spouse in Germany).
- Children’s allowance of €194 per child per month (for children living with the scholar in Germany).
- PhD scholars may apply for financial support for research stays abroad.
- Tuition-related expenses at German universities may be reimbursed up to €1,500 per semester, but regular semester fees are not covered.

- Scholars receive personal mentoring from KAS staff and university representatives to support their academic and professional growth.
- Access to an exclusive seminar program with over 180 events per year, covering political, economic, and social issues, as well as soft skills training.

Required Documents for the Scholarship
Applicants must submit the following documents:
- Curriculum Vitae (CV): A detailed tabular CV highlighting previous voluntary work or social commitment.
- Motivation Letter: A personal statement explaining your reasons for applying.
- Academic Certificates: Copies of examination certificates, translated into German if the originals are not in English.
- University Performance Records: If you have studied at a German university, submit copies of your study performance records.
- Proof of German Language Proficiency: B2-level certificate.
- Academic Letter of Recommendation: A letter from a university professor or a teacher with a doctoral degree, highlighting your academic qualifications and potential (not older than two months).
- Personal Recommendation Letter: A letter focusing on your personality, values, and social commitment, written by someone other than the academic referee.
- University Admission or Matriculation Certificate: Proof of admission or enrollment at a German university.
Additional Documents for PhD Applicants:
- Doctoral Thesis Description: A 5–10 page detailed exposé in German or English, including research questions, scientific relevance, theoretical approach, motives, work plan, and bibliography.
- Second Academic Letter of Recommendation: Written by your doctoral supervisor, replacing the personal recommendation letter.
- Confirmation of Supervision: A document confirming supervision by your doctoral advisor.
How to Apply for the 2025 KAS Scholarship Program (Step by Step)
There are two ways to apply for our scholarship program:
- Each year new focus countries or regions are determined for our selection procedures. In 2021 we will focus on Russia, Ukraine, Turkey, and Latin America (coordinated through our office in Peru) and interviews will be conducted online. If you are living in one of these countries, you may send your written application directly to the responsible KAS office – please check their websites for the exact procedure and addressee. Students living in countries that are not listed cannot apply for the international selection procedure in 2021.
- In case you are already living or studying in Germany, you are welcome to apply for a scholarship via the domestic selection program using our online procedure. Please fill out the application form online and upload all required application documents. Please do not send in any documents by mail as these will not be considered. The application period ends on July 15th (12:00/noon) each year for the domestic procedure.
