Auburn University Scholarship 2026 in USA Details
Auburn University is offering two MSc positions supervised by Dr. Ian A.E. Butts at the Aquatic Reproductive Physiology Lab, located at the E.W. Shell Fisheries Center in Auburn, Alabama. The lab’s long-term objectives are to support the development of sustainable aquaculture, fisheries management, and conservation biology through an interdisciplinary approach to reproductive biology and hatchery science.
The two positions focus on the following research areas:
Position 1 – Largemouth Bass (LMB) Hatchery Research: Largemouth bass is a high-value freshwater aquaculture species with a rapidly expanding food fish market in North America. Current rearing practices depend on uncontrollable pond-based technologies that suffer from high mortality, especially during early life stages. Consequently, this project will develop complete indoor intensive culture strategies for LMB to improve production yields and circumvent high mortality rates associated with early pond stages.

Position 2 – Hybrid Catfish Hatchery Research: Catfish remain a valuable food fish in the United States, though significant knowledge gaps exist during their early developmental stages. This project will similarly develop intensive indoor rearing strategies during the critical early life stages of hybrid catfish, focusing on optimising environmental factors, tank design, and feeding conditions.
Both students will use basic and applied research to understand developmental, physiological, and behavioural functions associated with early life stage development. Additionally, both positions will culminate in the writing of a detailed thesis. The students will begin coursework and research in August 2026 and the appointment runs through to August 2028.
