International Climate Protection Fellowship 2026 Details

The International Climate Protection Fellowship is designed to support climate protection efforts through international cooperation. It brings professionals and researchers to Germany to work on climate-related projects with local hosts.

For prospective leaders working practically, the fellowship supports a one-year project in Germany. For postdoctoral researchers, it supports long-term academic research lasting between 12 and 24 months.

Projects should focus on areas such as combating climate change, climate adaptation strategies, ecosystem and biodiversity protection, sustainable use of seas and oceans, natural resource sustainability, resource-efficient consumption, or urban development.

Each year, up to 15 fellowships are awarded to prospective leaders and up to five to postdoctoral researchers. The program is funded through the International Climate Initiative.

Eligibility Requirements for the International Climate Protection Fellowship 2026

  • Citizen of a non-European developing country
  • Predominantly living and working in the country of origin
  • Actively engaged in climate protection or climate-relevant resource conservation
  • Very good knowledge of English and/or German
  • Initial leadership experience and leadership skills

Additional requirements for prospective leaders:

  • First academic degree completed within the last 12 years
  • At least 24 months of relevant professional experience after the first degree, or
  • A Master’s degree plus at least 12 months of relevant professional experience

Additional requirements for postdocs:

  • First academic degree completed within the last 12 years
  • A doctorate related to climate protection or resource conservation
  • Doctorate awarded no more than four years before the deadline or to be completed by 31 August of the selection year
  • Publications reviewed according to international academic standards
