James Buchanan Fellowship 2026 Details
The James Buchanan Fellowship is a one-year academic program hosted by the Mercatus Center at George Mason University in Virginia. James M. Buchanan Jr. was a founder of the Virginia school of political economy, which explores the intersection between economics, politics, and law. Buchanan earned his PhD in economics from the University of Chicago and received the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Science in 1986 for “his contributions to the theory of political decision-making and public economics.” He was the director of what eventually became the Center for the Study of Public Choice at George Mason University and was a Professor of Economics at George Mason University from 1986 until his death in 2013.
The fellowship focuses on political economy and the ideas connected to Adam Smith and related schools of thought. Fellows take part in guided discussions, readings, and academic activities designed to support their research and teaching. The program runs across one academic year. It includes both in-person and virtual sessions. Fellows attend two weekend colloquia in residence at George Mason University and participate in additional online meetings during the year.
The fellowship is open to scholars from different academic disciplines, as long as their work connects to political economy.
