University of Idaho PhD Scholarship 2026 in USA Details
The PhD Graduate Research Assistantship: Virtual Fence – Range Cattle is offered by the University of Idaho’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, based at the Nancy M. Cummings Research, Extension, and Education Center (NMCREEC) in Salmon, Idaho.
This role focuses on studying how virtual fencing technology can be used to manage cattle movement in large, rugged rangelands. The aim is to understand how effective virtual fences are in controlling cattle in sensitive environments such as riparian zones, post-wildfire areas, and regions with invasive grasses.
The successful student will collect and analyse data on cattle movement, grazing patterns, vegetation, and environmental factors. You’ll also explore how virtual fencing affects cattle performance, behaviour, and predator interactions.
Although research will be carried out on-site in Idaho, coursework will mostly be completed online. You’ll also get to work closely with other scientists, cattle producers, and land management agencies — gaining valuable experience across different agricultural and environmental fields.
Start dates are flexible between January and April 2026, and the research is expected to run until between December 2028 and May 2029.
