Commonwealth Fellowship Programme 2027 | How to Apply

The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC) has restructured its fellowship offering for 2026/27 in a genuinely significant way — launching a new Commonwealth Fellowship Programme built around two distinct strands instead of one. Alongside the established Professional Fellowships, aimed at mid-career professionals looking to gain hands-on experience at a UK host organisation, there’s now a brand new Academic Fellowships strand specifically for university academics holding a PhD, focused on research collaboration and knowledge exchange with UK institutions.

The Two Strands, Explained

Commonwealth Professional Fellowships are for mid-career professionals from eligible Commonwealth countries, spending time at a UK host organisation working in their sector to gain hands-on professional development.

Commonwealth Academic Fellowships, new for this cycle, are specifically for academic staff who hold a PhD and are employed at a university in an eligible Commonwealth country. This strand focuses on academic skills updates, knowledge exchange, and networking, with a view to establishing future research collaborations with a UK university.

Both strands connect to one of CSC’s six development themes: science and technology for development, strengthening health systems, promoting innovation and entrepreneurship, global peace, security, and governance, crisis response and resilience, and access, inclusion, and opportunity.

Eligibility Requirements

For Professional Fellowships:

  • Be a citizen or refugee of an eligible Commonwealth country (other than the UK)
  • Be permanently resident in that country
  • Have at least five years of relevant full-time work experience
  • Be currently employed, with a genuine plan to return to the same organisation afterward
  • Not be applying for an academic research or degree programme
  • Not have held a Commonwealth Professional Fellowship in the last five years
  • Be available for the full fellowship period
  • Meet any additional criteria set by your specific chosen host organisation

For Academic Fellowships:

  • Hold a PhD
  • Be currently employed at a university in an eligible Commonwealth country (other than the UK)

Both strands require two to three referees, including one from your current employer.

What the Fellowship Covers

  • Approved return airfare from your home country to the UK
  • Reimbursement of the standard UK visa application fee
  • A monthly stipend of £2,218, or £2,753 for placements at organisations in the London metropolitan area (2025/26 rates)
  • An arrival allowance of up to £1,247.09, including an element for warm clothing
  • Additional funding for short courses, conferences, or travel to other UK organisations where genuinely integral to your programme — up to £1,000 for programmes lasting six weeks to two months, or up to £2,000 for programmes lasting two to three months
  • A full disability needs assessment and additional financial support, where a Fellow declares a disability

This is entirely free to apply for and participate in — there are no application or participation fees at any stage.

Timing and Immigration

Professional programmes must begin between mid-February and mid-March 2027, running six weeks to three months. Academic programmes must begin in January or February 2027, running three months.

Both strands require an appropriate UK immigration route — specifically the Temporary Work – Government Authorised Exchange visa, with sponsorship arrangements differing slightly between the two strands.

  • Completed online application, submitted directly through the CSC’s application system
  • A scan of your passport or national ID
  • Contact details for two to three referees, including your current employer
  • A Personal Statement (up to 500 words) covering your background and motivation
  • A Voluntary & Leadership Statement (up to 500 words) highlighting relevant activities and leadership capacity

  2. Choose a strand and host programme genuinely aligned with your background and career goals
  3. Register or sign in to the CSC’s online application system, verifying your email address with the code provided
  4. Gather your documents in advance — your two to three referees, your passport scan, and your three written statements
  5. Complete every section of the application carefully, explaining clearly why the fellowship matters to your professional development and how it will benefit both your organisation and your home country
  6. Upload all required documents in the correct format
  7. Review your complete application, then submit before 25 August 2026, 16:00 BST — late or incomplete applications are not accepted, and the CSC does not accept submissions by external email
