SENSS Student-Led Studentship 2027 | Fully Funded PhD
SENSS, the South and East Network for Social Sciences Doctoral Training Partnership, has opened applications for its student-led studentship competition, and this one puts the researcher in charge from the start. Rather than picking from a list of pre-set projects, you come up with your own research idea, find an academic supervisor across one of the 8 partner universities who fits your topic, and build the proposal together. The studentship is fully funded, covers one of 6 interdisciplinary themes, and even allows undergraduate-only applicants to apply, since a successful applicant without a Master’s will be funded for one alongside the PhD.

What is a SENSS Student-Led Studentship?
A SENSS student-led studentship funds a doctoral researcher to work on a project they have personally designed, guided throughout by an expert academic supervisory team. Some projects also involve a collaborative partner such as a business, charity, or think tank, who can provide access to data, equipment, or participants, additional funding, an extra supervisor, or even a placement.

SENSS Student-Led Studentship: Who Should Apply
SENSS is looking for research ideas that bring something new to an academic field and speak to major challenges facing the UK or the world, paired with a strong match between the applicant, the chosen university, and the proposed supervisors.
- Undergraduate degree holders can apply without a Master’s. If selected, you’ll receive funding to complete a Masters as well as your PhD.
- SENSS ring-fences nine studentships each year across three priority areas: Data Skills, Advanced Quantitative Methods (AQM), and Interdisciplinarity. If your project fits one or more of these, say so clearly in your application.
- For the first time this year, SENSS has approved one ring-fenced award specifically for an applicant who is an asylum seeker or refugee.
- SENSS also encourages applications from “Home” students from certain underrepresented backgrounds, including specific ethnic backgrounds, those who grew up in a less affluent area, people with disabilities, carers, and those who were in care as children. Qualifying applicants are encouraged to complete the equal opportunities form during the online application.

What You Get from the SENSS Studentship
- Funded PhD. The studentship covers your doctoral research at one of the 8 SENSS partner universities.
- Funded Masters for those without one. If you hold only an undergraduate degree (or the professional equivalent) and you win, SENSS pays for a Masters as well as the PhD.
- Supervision. You work under an expert academic supervisory team throughout your project.
- A placement. Your studies include a placement, but you do not need to have arranged one before you apply.
- Extra support from a collaborative partner. If your project involves a business, charity or think tank, that partner can give you access to data, equipment or participants, additional funding for your studentship, an extra supervisor, or a placement.
Helpful Resources Before You Apply
SENSS provides several guidance documents you should read before drafting your application, including a detailed application guide, supervisor guidance notes, a collaborative partner letter template, the competition policy, and a flowchart of the whole process. An example application form is also available for reference only; the real submission must go through the official online system, not that example form.
SENSS is also running a series of webinars on writing a strong application:
- Wednesday 14 October 2026, 12:00 to 13:30
- Wednesday 4 November 2026, 18:00 to 19:30
- Saturday 5 December 2026, 11:00 to 12:30
A separate webinar for potential supervisors takes place on Wednesday 25 November 2026, 13:00 to 14:00, led by Professor Fragkiskos Filippaios and Professor Rico Isaacs.

How the Application Process Works
- Settle on a research topic and confirm it fits within one of the 6 SENSS themes.
- Identify an academic at a SENSS university whose work matches your topic. If you’re not sure who to approach, the SENSS Operational Lead at that university can help, once you give them your theme, research area, and topic.
- Contact your proposed supervisor directly with a short email showing you’ve read their work, explaining your intention to apply for a PhD, and summarising your project and any prior research experience.
- If your proposed supervisor agrees to work with you, apply for a place to study at that university. The deadline for this step is set by the university itself, so confirm it with them directly.
- Separately, submit your SENSS funding application through HEIApply, the official online platform, by 12:00 GMT on Monday 11 January 2027.
You don’t need to have arranged your placement before applying. Not having one at this stage will not count against your application.
What Happens After You Apply
Your application is assessed first by your chosen home university. If it passes that stage, it moves to the SENSS Thematic panel for your research area, where it’s graded and ranked against other applications in that theme. The SENSS Management Board then meets to decide the final awards. You’ll be kept informed at each stage of how your application is progressing, and final decisions are communicated by mid-April.
Application Deadline
The deadline for the SENSS funding application is 12:00 noon GMT on Monday, 11 January 2027, which is 1:00 pm in Nigeria (WAT). Applicants will be told by mid-April 2027 whether they got the studentship, and successful candidates start in October 2027.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a Master’s degree to apply?
No. SENSS welcomes applications from undergraduate degree holders. If you’re successful, you’ll receive funding for a Masters as well as your PhD.
Do I need to have found a placement before applying?
No. You don’t need to have identified your placement at the point of application, and your application won’t be marked down for not having one yet.
What if my project involves working with an outside organisation?
If your project has a collaborative element with a non-academic partner, you’ll need a letter of support from that partner. SENSS provides a template for this as part of its guidance documents.
When will I know if I’ve been awarded a studentship?
You’ll be notified by mid-April whether you’ve been awarded a SENSS student-led studentship.
Is the deadline the same for the university application and the SENSS funding application?
No. Your university application deadline is set by your chosen university, so you’ll need to confirm it with them separately. The SENSS funding application deadline is fixed at 12:00 GMT on Monday 11 January 2027.
