About the Slovakia Scholarships for Talented Students

The Scholarships for Talented Students from All Over the World programme is a Slovak government initiative designed to attract outstanding international students to study full-time at selected public higher education institutions (HEIs) in Slovakia. The programme is funded through two separate channels: the European Structural and Investment Funds (ESIF) for universities outside the Bratislava region, and the Slovak state budget for universities within it.

Eligible study programmes are connected to Slovakia’s Smart Specialisation Strategy (SK RIS3 2021+), a national framework that prioritises research and innovation in key sectors. Not all programmes at Slovak universities qualify — students must confirm that their intended programme appears on the official eligible list before applying.

The number of scholarships available is fixed across two levels:

Bachelor’s level:

  • 100 scholarships — universities outside the Bratislava region (ESIF-funded)
  • 50 scholarships — universities within the Bratislava region (state budget-funded)

Master’s level:

  • 30 scholarships — universities outside the Bratislava region (ESIF-funded)
  • 15 scholarships — universities within the Bratislava region (state budget-funded)

Applicants are grouped by geographical region during assessment — Europe, USA/Canada/Australia/New Zealand/Oceania, South America, Central America and Africa, and Asia. Check the official programme page for the complete country-by-category list.

  • You must meet the admission requirements of your chosen university and programme
  • Your intended programme must be on the official list of eligible programmes connected to Slovakia’s Smart Specialisation Strategy (SK RIS3 2021+)
  • You must take either the SAT or SCIO standardised test and achieve at least:
    • SAT score of 1,100, or
    • SCIO average percentile score of 63

Required Documents

  • Valid passport or national ID card
  • Solemn declaration of permanent residence (confirming no permanent residence in Slovakia since January 1, 2021)
  • SAT or SCIO test certificate showing the required minimum score
  • Acceptance letter from a selected Slovak public university (if already obtained)
  • Structured Curriculum Vitae (CV) in English
  • Motivation letter in English
  • Slovak Living Abroad certificate (for Slovaks living abroad, where applicable)
  • Guardian consent form (for applicants under 18 years of age)

Start gathering these documents now. The SAT and SCIO tests require advance booking, and obtaining an acceptance letter from a Slovak university takes time. Waiting for the portal to open before preparing is a risk — applicants who are ready when the portal goes live have a significant advantage.

How to Apply

  1. Confirm that your nationality and residency status make you eligible — you must be a non-Slovak citizen with no permanent residence in Slovakia since January 1, 2021.
  2. Browse the list of selected Slovak public higher education institutions and eligible programmes on the official programme website. Confirm that your intended degree programme qualifies under Slovakia’s Smart Specialisation Strategy (SK RIS3 2021+) before proceeding.
  3. Apply for admission to your chosen eligible programme at a selected Slovak public university. Obtaining an acceptance letter ahead of the scholarship portal opening strengthens your application.
  4. Register for and take either the SAT or SCIO test. You must achieve a minimum SAT score of 1,100 or a SCIO average percentile of 63. Book your test date early — test centres fill up and results take time to process.
  5. Prepare your structured CV and motivation letter in English. These are assessed as part of the selection process — your motivation letter in particular should clearly explain why you are applying, what draws you to your chosen programme and institution in Slovakia, and what you plan to do with the qualification.
  6. Gather all remaining required documents: valid passport or national ID, solemn declaration of permanent residence, SAT/SCIO certificate, and — if applicable — your Slovak Living Abroad certificate or guardian consent form.
  7. Monitor the official Slovakia Scholarships programme webpage for the announcement of the registration opening date. This page will also be updated when the portal goes live.
  8. Once the portal opens, complete and submit your online scholarship application and upload all required supporting documents before the announced deadline.

What is the SAT or SCIO test requirement for the Slovakia Scholarships?

All applicants must take either the SAT (Scholastic Assessment Test) or the SCIO test — a Czech standardised assessment used for university admissions — and meet the minimum score threshold. For the SAT, you need at least 1,100 out of 1,600. For the SCIO test, you need an average percentile score of at least 63. Both test certificates must be submitted as part of your scholarship application. Book your test early, as registration slots and result processing times can affect your ability to meet the scholarship deadline.

Do I need an acceptance letter from a Slovak university before applying for the scholarship?

An acceptance letter is listed as a required document “if available,” meaning you can apply without one, but having it strengthens your application considerably. It also confirms that your chosen programme is eligible under the Smart Specialisation Strategy. Apply to your chosen Slovak university as early as possible so that you have the letter ready when the scholarship portal opens.

How much is the Slovakia scholarship worth in total?

The scholarship is worth up to €5,000 per academic year, which includes a monthly stipend of €500. For bachelor’s students, funding lasts up to three years — a total of up to €15,000. For master’s students, funding lasts up to two years — a total of up to €10,000. Some universities may also waive tuition fees for scholarship recipients, though this is decided at the institutional level and is not guaranteed.

Which universities in Slovakia offer this scholarship?

The scholarship is available only at selected Slovak public higher education institutions — not all universities in Slovakia participate. The official programme website maintains the current list of participating institutions and their eligible programmes. Check it directly before applying, as the list may be updated between cycles.
