What You Get

  • Tuition fee waiver: covers seven semesters.
  • Monthly stipend: RM3,500 per month for 42 months, which comes to RM147,000 in total.

The university will not pay for the preparation of agreement documents, passport, insurance, visa, flight tickets, medical examinations or accommodation. You must budget for all of these yourself. Because of this, I did not put “Fully Funded” in the title, even though the source calls it a full scholarship.

Fields of Study

Your PhD topic must fall within one of UM’s 10 thrust areas:

  • Rare earths and critical minerals
  • Artificial Intelligence and digital robotic realms
  • Space science and new engineering spectrum
  • Defence and security assets and inventory innovation and creation
  • Comprehensive medical and health spectrum excellence
  • Social science advancement in economics, smart finance, societal matters, international norms and law, and geopolitics
  • Nuclear energy and new energy transition
  • Food sustainability and security
  • Semiconductor and chips
  • Nanotechnology and quantum exploration

The university can decide which field is suitable for a scholarship offer, based on the merits of each case.

Universiti Malaya Bright Scholarship: Who Can Apply

You must meet all of these:

  1. You are not older than 30 in the year you apply.
  2. You have a valid full offer letter from Universiti Malaya when you apply for the scholarship.
  3. You have a Bachelor’s degree with a minimum CGPA of 3.70/4.00 or an equivalent recognised qualification.
  4. You have a Master’s degree by research, or a Master’s by mixed mode, with a minimum CGPA of 3.70/4.00 or an equivalent recognised qualification.
  5. You are not receiving sponsorship from any other organisation or party.
  6. If you are not a Malaysian citizen, you can prove your English level (see below).

Direct entry from a Bachelor’s degree to a PhD (fast-track) is not allowed. Nigerian applicants use a 5.0 CGPA scale in most universities, so you must confirm how UM converts your grade to the 4.0 scale. The source does not give a conversion table. A Master’s degree done only by coursework is not listed, so check with the secretariat if yours was.

English Language Requirement

International applicants must have one of these. The test must not be older than 2 years.

  • IELTS Academic overall band of 6.5 or above
  • TOEFL iBT score of 73 or above
  • An official English qualification equal to CEFR B2 or above
  • A Letter of Medium of Instruction (MOI) from your previous university, confirming your programme was taught entirely in English

Nigerian graduates who studied in English can use the MOI letter instead of paying for IELTS or TOEFL. The university decides whether any other English qualification is acceptable.

Fill the online form and attach:
