University of Pavia CICOPS Scholarships 2027 in Italy — Fully Funded
The University of Pavia CICOPS Scholarships 2027 are open to international scholars from developing countries, and the application deadline is June 10, 2026. If you hold a PhD or have worked for at least two years as teaching, research, or technical staff at a university, research centre, or international organisation, this programme funds a 4 to 12-week research stay in Italy, where you will work directly with a host professor at the University of Pavia on a joint research project.
The programme is not open to anyone simply interested in studying in Italy — it is built specifically for working researchers and academics who already have an active research output to build on. Eight scholarships are available for the 2027 cycle, hosted by the University of Pavia in collaboration with EDISU, and one requirement sets this opportunity apart from most scholarships you will come across: you must secure an invitation letter from a University of Pavia professor before you can even submit your application. That single requirement shapes the entire process, so understanding it early matters more here than in almost any other scholarship category.

About the University of Pavia CICOPS Scholarships
The University of Pavia is one of Italy’s oldest universities, with a long-standing tradition of international research partnerships. The CICOPS Scholarships — administered through the university’s Centre for International Cooperation with Developing Countries, in partnership with EDISU — exist to support short-term research collaboration between scholars from developing countries and faculty at Pavia.
The programme is built around mobility, not coursework. Selected scholars travel to Italy for a defined period and work directly alongside a host professor on a joint research project, rather than enrolling in a degree programme. The research stay must fall within one of two fixed windows for the 2027 cycle:
- January 11 to July 24, 2027
- September 6 to December 18, 2027
Eight scholarships will be awarded for this cycle. Selection is based on the scientific relevance of the proposed research, the applicant’s academic background and CV, and a deliberate effort to balance awards across departments and regions. Preference may be given to applicants from lower-income countries and to those who already have some institutional connection to the University of Pavia.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the University of Pavia CICOPS Scholarship fully funded?
Yes. The scholarship fully funds a 4 to 12-week research stay in Italy for selected scholars. It does not lead to a degree — it is a short-term research collaboration opportunity for working academics and researchers.
Can Nigerian researchers apply for the CICOPS Scholarship?
Yes, provided Nigeria falls under the World Bank’s low-income, lower-middle-income, or upper-middle-income classification at the time of application, and you meet the academic and professional eligibility requirements. Confirm Nigeria’s current World Bank classification before applying, as these classifications can change.
Do I need a PhD to apply for this scholarship?
Not necessarily. You can qualify either by holding a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree, or by having at least two years of employment as teaching, research, or technical staff at a university, research centre, or international organisation, combined with at least 2 recent scientific publications or research outputs.
What happens if I don’t have a contact at the University of Pavia?
Use the university’s UNIFIND research tool to search for professors working in your field and reach out to them directly. The CICOPS office will not assign a supervisor for you — securing your own invitation letter is part of the application process itself.
Can I apply if I am currently enrolled in a doctoral programme?
Only if your programme is not at an Italian university. Applicants currently enrolled in a doctoral or postgraduate programme at an Italian institution are not eligible for this scholarship.
