How the IMF Economist Program Selection Process Works

  1. Preliminary interview. Shortlisted candidates have a 30 to 40 minute interview. You give an overview of your research and discuss economic topics related to the IMF’s work.
  2. Supporting materials. After the interview you may be asked for your latest PhD transcript, three academic references and a research paper of publishable standard, or one or two dissertation chapters. Current IMF staff cannot be your referees.
  3. Panel interview and written assessment. Selected candidates meet two or three senior IMF economists and a Human Resources officer in person, and take a 90-minute written assessment. The panel tests your knowledge of monetary, fiscal, balance of payments and financial sector issues, your policy judgment, communication and interpersonal skills.
  4. Final review. An internal committee of senior staff reviews everything. The panel interview and research paper carry the greatest weight.
