Five fully funded Sanctuary Scholarships are available for students beginning their studies at the University of Sheffield in September 2026. Each scholarship covers the full cost of tuition and provides a £10,300 annual maintenance award to help with living costs paid once the student has arrived in Sheffield and completed full registration.
This scholarship cannot be deferred. It cannot be combined with other University of Sheffield funding awards. And it cannot be awarded alongside funding from a UK funding agency such as Student Finance England. In other words, this scholarship is specifically carved out for those who fall through the gaps of mainstream funding, those whose circumstances mean the usual routes to support are closed to them.

Applications are assessed competitively by a panel of senior University staff. Where applications are of similar standing, priority is given to students located within the Sheffield city region and the surrounding area. Scholarships are awarded on a ratio of 2:3 in favour of either undergraduate or postgraduate students, depending on the strength of applications received. will be responsible for paying the full tuition fees for the remaining years of their degree programme.
There are also a few important things to note. The scholarship cannot be awarded to PhD or research degree students only undergraduate and postgraduate taught course students are eligible. Additionally, students who joined Sheffield through clearing are not eligible to apply, and neither are students transferring from another UK university.

Eligibility Requirements for the University of Sheffield Sanctuary Scholarships 2026/2027 in UK
- Must have been granted humanitarian protection or limited leave to remain in the UK, or be a dependant or partner of someone with humanitarian protection or limited leave to remain, or be an asylum seeker (or have a parent/guardian or partner who is) with a pending claim for refugee status that has not yet received a Home Office decision
- Must have applied for asylum on arrival in the UK, and before applying for a university place
- Must currently attend a school, college, or community/voluntary group that will provide a supporting reference
- Must hold an offer from the University of Sheffield to study an undergraduate or postgraduate taught course starting in September 2026
- Must not hold a qualification equal to or higher than the one being applied for
- Must be ineligible for other University of Sheffield scholarships such as Access to Sheffield Scholarships or a University bursary
- Must not be eligible to receive support from a UK funding agency such as Student Finance England
- Must be self-funded not supported by a research council, government, private enterprise, charity, or similar organisation
- Must study full-time
- Must not have exhausted all appeal rights without a fresh asylum claim or application to remain under another immigration category
