Northern Michigan University Graduate Scholarship 2026 Details
The Energetics Lab at Northern Michigan University is looking for a Master’s student to take part in a research project titled:
Seasonal Changes of the Cardiac Proteome and Heart Functionality During Winter Hibernation
The project will explore how some animals can slow down their metabolism, survive cold temperatures, and keep their hearts beating even when their body temperature drops close to zero. You will work under Dr Sylvain Giroud from Northern Michigan University, in collaboration with Dr Fabrice Bertile from CNRS Strasbourg in France.
Main tasks include:
- Reviewing scientific studies on how hibernating animals adapt
- Analysing heart-related data from hibernating species
- Helping develop a new animal model for cardiometabolic studies
This is a paid Graduate Teaching Assistantship that supports students for up to two years. The position starts in Fall 2026, but starting earlier in summer 2026 is possible.
The role requires at least 40 hours per week at Northern Michigan University in Marquette, Michigan.

2026 Northern Michigan University Graduate Scholarship Eligibility Requirements
To qualify, you must:
- Have a Bachelor’s degree
- Have a background in Animal Physiology, Cellular Physiology, or Molecular Physiology
- Be willing to learn data analysis software
- Have experience with statistics and R programming
- Be able to work full-time
- Have an interest in research and laboratory work
