About the A*STAR ACIS Scholarship
A*STAR is Singapore’s lead public agency for research, innovation, and enterprise in science and technology. Through the ACIS Scholarship, A*STAR funds PhD candidates at the National University of Singapore whose research spans computing and information science — from deep learning and artificial intelligence to data analytics, modelling, and simulation.
Scholars are embedded in A*STAR’s research ecosystem throughout the programme, with access to research infrastructure, mentorship from scientists at A*STAR’s research entities, and direct exposure to careers in industry R&D, technology enterprises, and academic institutions. Research areas currently supported include:
- Deep learning for healthcare applications
- Advanced data analytics and machine learning
- Modelling and simulation for engineering and scientific challenges
- Other frontier computing and information science domains
Scholars who complete their PhD are also eligible to apply for the A*STAR International Fellowship, which provides up to two years of funding for post-doctoral training at an overseas research institution. This makes the ACIS Scholarship a two-stage launchpad — PhD funding now, with a structured path to international post-doctoral research after graduation.

Eligibility Requirements
You must meet all of the following to be considered:
- You hold at least a Second Upper Class Honours degree, or its equivalent, in a discipline related to computing and information science
- You have a genuine interest in a research career in computing and information science — in industry R&D, technology enterprises, spin-off companies, or academic institutions
- The scholarship is open to Singapore Citizens, Singapore Permanent Residents, and international students from all countries
- GRE scores are optional — you may submit them if available and they will be considered as part of your overall assessment, but they are not required
Service commitment and bond:
- Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents: No service commitment of any kind. You are free to work anywhere after completing the PhD.
- International students: A three-year service commitment in a Singapore-based company is required after graduation. There is no requirement to work for any specific employer — you choose where to work. The role should preferably be within computing and information science. Singapore-based companies include both local firms and international companies registered in Singapore under ACRA.
- Bond: There are no bond requirements for any category of applicant.

Required Documents
Prepare the following before you submit:
- At least two referee reports from academic or professional referees who can speak to your research ability and academic performance
- A written description of your proposed research area — outlining the focus you intend to pursue during your PhD
- All academic certificates and transcripts showing that you hold at least a Second Upper Class Honours degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline
- GRE scores (optional) — submit if available to strengthen your application
- A concurrent PhD admission application submitted directly to the National University of Singapore
Practical note: The A*STAR ACIS Scholarship application runs in parallel with the NUS PhD admission process — you must submit both at the same time. Do not apply for the scholarship without also submitting your NUS PhD application. If your preferred research supervisor is not listed under the A*STAR-approved supervisors on the AGS webpage, contact them directly before the deadline to discuss a potential research project and confirm availability.

How to Apply — Step by Step
- Decide which intake you are applying for — August 2027 (Semester 1) or January 2028 (Semester 2)
- Review the list of A*STAR-approved PhD supervisors on the A*STAR Graduate Scholarship (AGS) webpage under the “Research Areas and Supervisors” tab
- Identify a supervisor whose research area matches your interests. Approved supervisors are available on the ASTAR Graduate Scholarship (AGS) webpage under the “Research Areas and Supervisors” tab. If your preferred supervisor is not listed, contact them directly to discuss potential research projects
- Prepare your application documents: two referee reports, your proposed research area description, academic transcripts and certificates, and GRE scores if available
- Submit your ACIS Scholarship application through the A*STAR scholarships portal
- Submit your PhD admission application to NUS at the same time — both applications must run concurrently
- If shortlisted, attend at least two rounds of interviews with senior leadership from A*STAR’s Biomedical Research Council or Science and Engineering Research Council, and researchers from A*STAR’s Research Entities
- Await results — successful candidates will be notified, and their choice of supervisor, research project, and university will be subject to final approval by A*STAR

Application Deadline
1 August 2026

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the A*STAR ACIS Scholarship fully funded?
Yes. The scholarship covers full tuition for the entire PhD, a monthly stipend of up to SGD 5,800 depending on your nationality, and a full suite of allowances covering books, computing equipment, conferences, thesis preparation, and overseas research attachment. There is nothing to repay.
Can international students apply for the A*STAR ACIS Scholarship?
Yes. The scholarship is open to all nationalities — Singapore Citizens, Permanent Residents, and international students. International graduates receive a monthly stipend of SGD 4,550 and are subject to a three-year service commitment in a Singapore-based company after completing the PhD. There is no requirement to work for any specific employer.
Do I need a GRE score to apply for the A*STAR ACIS Scholarship?
No. GRE scores are optional. If you have them, you may submit them as part of your application and they will be considered in the overall assessment. Your application will not be penalised if you do not submit GRE scores.
Do I need to apply to NUS separately?
Yes. The ACIS Scholarship application and the NUS PhD admission application are two separate processes that must be submitted at the same time. Submitting only one of the two will not complete your candidacy. Review NUS’s PhD admission requirements and timeline before the 1 August 2026 deadline.
Is there a bond attached to the A*STAR ACIS Scholarship?
No. There are no bond requirements for any applicant category. Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents have no service commitment at all. International students must complete three years of work at a Singapore-based company after the PhD, but they choose their own employer — there is no obligation to work for A*STAR or any specific organisation.
What happens after I complete my PhD through the ACIS Scholarship?
ACIS graduates are eligible to apply for the A*STAR International Fellowship, which provides up to two years of funded post-doctoral training at a leading overseas research institution or laboratory. This is a separate competitive application, but it is only open to A*STAR scholarship graduates.
