About the BSc Nursing Scholarship in UK

The HEIW International Bursary at Wrexham University is part of the International Pre-Registration Nursing Programme (IPRN), a three-year pilot project approved by the Welsh Government in May 2023 to address nursing workforce shortages in NHS Wales. The programme is run by Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW) in partnership with Wrexham University and NHS Wales.

Wrexham University, formerly known as Glyndŵr University, is a public university located in Wrexham, north Wales. It is one of six universities in Wales participating in the IPRN. The nursing programme at Wrexham is delivered from the Health Education Innovation Quarter (HEIQ), the university’s dedicated health education facility housing nursing and allied health programmes.

The bursary extends to international students the same NHS Wales Bursary arrangement that has long been available to UK-domiciled students — funded nurse training in exchange for a post-qualification work commitment in Wales. Before the IPRN was approved in 2023, international students had no access to this funding route. The number of funded international places is determined annually by the Welsh Government based on NHS Wales workforce needs, and places are limited. There are no self-funded international places on this programme — if you do not receive the bursary, you cannot study on this course as an international student.

What the BSc Nursing Scholarship Covers

The bursary covers the following:

  • £16,500 per year toward your tuition fees, paid by HEIW for each of the three years of your BN (Hons) Adult Nursing degree at Wrexham University
  • A one-time £1,500 grant paid to you to help with living and settling-in costs on arrival in Wales

One important clarification on the tuition bursary: the £16,500 per year is paid toward tuition fees, not as a living allowance. It does not cover accommodation, food, transport, or personal expenses during your three years of study. Budget separately for living costs in Wrexham — average monthly student living costs in Wrexham are lower than in Cardiff or London, typically ranging from £700 to £900 per month for accommodation, food, and transport combined.

The £1,500 settling-in grant is a one-time payment. It is not a recurring annual payment.

Post-Study Work Commitment and Repayment

In exchange for the bursary, you must remain in Wales and work as a registered nurse for a minimum of 24 months after completing your degree and registering with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

If you leave Wales before completing your 24-month work commitment, you may be required to repay some or all of the tuition bursary received. The exact repayment terms are set by HEIW. Confirm the full repayment conditions on the official HEIW or Wrexham University programme page before accepting a place.
