About the GCUB International Mobility Scholarship
GCUB was founded on 29 October 2008 as a non-profit civil association with academic, scientific, and cultural objectives. It now operates as a network of 104 Brazilian higher education institutions and 10 foreign partner institutions, working with international organisations, foreign universities, and government bodies across all five continents.
The GCUB-Mob programme connects to three United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The scholarship supports SDG 4 (Quality Education) by expanding postgraduate access for international students. It advances SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities) by creating opportunities for students from developing countries and underrepresented regions. It also contributes to SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) by strengthening cross-border research collaboration between Brazilian institutions and the global academic community.
Scholars are integrated as full postgraduate students at their host university, with the same access to classes, libraries, laboratories, and study facilities as Brazilian students. The degree awarded carries full Brazilian academic recognition. Scholars are expected to return to their home country after completing their studies and apply what they have learned there.
For Nigerian and West African applicants, this is one of the largest postgraduate scholarship programmes currently open in South America, and one with relatively limited competition from this region compared to programmes in Europe or North America. What the GCUB International Mobility Scholarship Covers
The GCUB International Mobility Scholarship 2027 covers:
- Full tuition exemption — complete exemption from all academic fees for your enrolled programme
- Monthly stipend throughout your regular study period, paid at the same rate as Brazilian federal research agencies pay local postgraduate students
- Access to university restaurants on the same terms as Brazilian students, where available
- Full access to classes, libraries, laboratories, and study rooms at your host university
- Up to 24 months of stipend support for Master’s programmes
- Up to 48 months of stipend support for Doctoral programmes
This scholarship does not cover airfare, visa processing fees, international health insurance, document legalisation, or personal living expenses beyond the stipend. You must have the financial capacity to cover these costs yourself before the stipend begins and during your initial arrival in Brazil. Plan your finances in advance, as the programme will only begin paying the stipend after you enrol and arrive in Brazil.

Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for the GCUB International Mobility Scholarship 2027, you must meet all of the following:
- You must not hold Brazilian nationality.
- You must be a citizen of a country that maintains diplomatic relations with Brazil.
- You must hold an undergraduate (Bachelor’s) degree, regardless of whether you are applying for a Master’s or Doctorate.
- If applying for a Doctorate and the chosen programme requires it, you must also hold a Master’s degree.
- You must declare that you are in good physical and mental health to undertake postgraduate study.
- You must have the financial capacity to cover airfare, visa issuance, and international health insurance before your stipend begins.
- Your application must be submitted in Portuguese, English, Spanish, or French.
- You must demonstrate at least an intermediate level of Portuguese proficiency before defending your dissertation or thesis — this is not required at application stage, but it is a condition of completing the programme.
You may apply to a maximum of four Master’s or Doctorate programmes, preferably across different universities and regions of Brazil. Required Documents
All documents must be uploaded in PDF format through the GCUB Online Application Form. You will need:
- Valid identity document — passport, national identity document, or nationality document
- Curriculum Vitae (CV)
- Bachelor’s degree diploma or official certificate of completion. If your degree is not yet finalised, include your expected completion date.
- For Doctorate applicants: Master’s degree diploma or certificate of completion, if required by the chosen programme
- Text 1 — for each programme you apply to: a statement of academic expectations, research interests, and professional plans upon returning to your home country, maximum 1,000 words
- Text 2 — for each programme you apply to: a full research proposal, maximum 4,000 words, covering the central research theme and problem, delimitation and justification, objectives, literature review, methodological process, research schedule, and bibliographic references
- For professors: proof of affiliation with a Higher Education Institution
All written texts must use Times New Roman, size 12, 1.5 line spacing, and 2.5 cm margins on all sides. If a host institution requests it, you may need a sworn (officially certified) translation of your documents into Portuguese.
A practical warning: because you can apply to up to four programmes, and each requires its own Text 1 and Text 2, you could be writing up to eight separate documents — four academic statements and four research proposals, each tailored to a different programme and university. Do not write one generic proposal and copy it across all four. Each host university reviews your application independently in Phase 2, and a research proposal that does not connect to the specific programme and faculty expertise at that university weakens your chances at that institution.

How to Apply
- Access the GCUB Online Application Form.
- Browse the Table of Master’s and Doctorate Programs of Brazilian HEIs and select up to four programmes — preferably spread across different regions of Brazil to align with the geographical distribution criteria used in final selection.
- Prepare all required documents in PDF format, formatted according to the Times New Roman / 1.5 spacing / 2.5 cm margin specifications above.
- Write Text 1 (academic and professional statement, max 1,000 words) and Text 2 (research proposal, max 4,000 words) separately for each programme you select.
- Upload all documents through the online portal.
- Submit your application before 6 July 2026 at 11:59 p.m. (BRT).
The application is free of charge. You may submit only one application — submitting more than one results in automatic disqualification regardless of the quality of either submission.

Selection Process
The GCUB-Mob selection runs through three eliminatory phases:
Phase 1 — Document Consistency Analysis: A GCUB-appointed committee checks every application for completeness and compliance. Incomplete applications, or those submitted after the deadline, are eliminated at this stage regardless of academic merit.
Phase 2 — Merit and Eligibility Analysis: Applications that pass Phase 1 are sent to the host universities you selected. Each university reviews your application independently and returns a pre-approval or rejection.
Phase 3 — Final Classification: An Advisory Evaluation Committee of PhD-level academics makes final vacancy decisions. This stage considers geographical distribution across Brazil, the Human Development Index (HDI) of your country, gender balance, and your ranked order of programme preferences.
GCUB publishes the results on its official website and sends every applicant written notification after the selection process concludes.

Brazil Time (BRT, UTC-3) is four hours behind West Africa Time (WAT, UTC+1). A deadline of 11:59 p.m. BRT on 6 July falls at 3:59 a.m. WAT on 7 July.
