METI Japan Internship Program 2026
The METI Japan Internship Program 2026 closes today, 30 June 2026, Japan Standard Time, though the exact cutoff hour is not published on the official site. If you are 18 to 39 as of 24 August 2026, hold citizenship of an OECD/DAC-listed country other than China, and have not done this internship between FY2016 and FY2025, you can still apply.
The programme places you with a Japanese small or medium-sized company, with roughly one intern accepted per company across a maximum of 80 companies. It covers your flights, accommodation, and a daily allowance, and runs either online from 24 August to 18 September 2026, or in person across two possible terms in October–November or November–December 2026.
If the application window has already closed by the time you read this, do not attempt to submit. Use this post to prepare early for the next cycle instead.
About the METI Japan Internship Program
The METI Japan Internship Program is run by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and managed by the JIP Office, in partnership with Pasona Inc. Its purpose is to connect highly skilled foreign professionals and graduates with small and medium-sized Japanese companies that want to expand internationally. The programme is built around roles such as engineers, researchers, interpreters, overseas-expansion sales staff, and legal or accounting professionals — it is designed for candidates who have already completed a degree and are looking to apply that background inside a Japanese company.
Unlike a typical paid internship, this is explicitly described as work experience rather than employment, and it operates using Japanese government public funds. That comes with structural rules that don’t apply to most internships: once you are matched with a host company, you cannot decline the match, and once the internship begins, it cannot be interrupted by either side for any reason. This is one of the clearest signals that METI wants applicants who are fully certain about their commitment before they apply — not candidates testing the waters.
Selection runs through a structured matching process rather than a simple “apply and wait” model. The JIP Office reviews documents, conducts a first interview in Japanese or English, then matches successful candidates with a host company based on experience and stated preferences. The host company itself conducts a second interview and makes the final decision on whether to accept you. This means two separate parties have to say yes — the government office screening you, and the specific company you’re matched with.

How to Apply
- Review the full Application Overview on the official METI internship site.
- Submit your application through the official entry form.
- If you pass document screening, you will be asked to submit certificates and a recommendation letter, then attend a first interview with the JIP Office in Japanese or English.
- If you pass the first interview, the Office matches you with a host company based on your experience and preferences, and you attend a second interview with that company.
- The company makes the final decision. If you do not receive an email by the result date listed for your course, this means you were not selected — the Office cannot respond to individual inquiries during the selection process.
Application Deadline
The deadline is 30 June 2026, Japan Standard Time. The official site does not publish a specific cutoff hour. JST is 8 hours ahead of WAT — if you are applying from Nigeria, treat the deadline as already same-day rather than assuming hours of buffer remain.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Is the METI Japan Internship Program 2026 fully funded?
Yes for in-person interns: flights, accommodation, visa support, and a daily allowance are all covered. Online interns receive a smaller daily allowance and equipment support rather than flights or accommodation, since there is no travel involved.
Can Nigerian and African students apply?
Yes, provided Nigeria or the applicant’s country appears on the OECD/DAC list of recipient countries. Confirm your country’s current listing directly on the OECD’s published list before applying.
What language level do I need?
You need JLPT N3 or CEFR B1 level Japanese, or sufficient English proficiency. The exact requirement depends on the host company you are matched with.
When does the next METI Japan Internship cycle open?
This cycle closes today. METI typically runs annual cycles, so the next intake is expected sometime in 2027. Bookmark the official page and check periodically.
Can I withdraw after being matched with a company?
No. Once a match is confirmed, it cannot be declined, and once the internship begins, interruptions are not permitted from either the company or the intern. Apply only if you can commit fully.
