Germany Opens Student Visa Processing in Nigeria via VFS | Big Opportunity for Nigerian Applicants

This article is about how Germany opens student visa processing in Nigeria via VFS. In what can only be described as massive and long-awaited news, Germany has officially taken a major step to ease student visa access for Nigerians. For many years, Nigerian students applying to study in Germany faced thousands of missed academic intakes, appointment wait times of 19 to 24 months and experience limited embassy slots.

After years of delays, missed opportunities, and crushed study-abroad dreams, Germany has now partnered with Visa Facilitation Services (VFS) Global to handle student visa application processing in Lagos, Nigeria.

This development is expected to significantly reduce waiting times and improve access for Nigerian students seeking to study in Germany.

As Germany opens student visa processing in Nigeria via VFS, applicants should now focus on the core requirements. Here is what it takes to study in Germany:

1. Study Program

Finding a study program is not a requirement as much as it is an essential first step to get you started on your journey to studying in Germany.

This is where it all begins, so take your time to research a program that matches your interests, offers interesting courses, and for which you fulfill basic eligibility requirements and submit University Application Documents.

2. Admission Letter

Secure admission into a German university (many public universities have low or zero tuition fees).

Also consider language requirements – English-taught programs → IELTS/TOEFL and German-taught programs → German language (B1–C1).

3. Proof of Financial Resources

International students need to have €11,904 – €12,500 per year to cover their living expenses in Germany. If you need a student visa for Germany, you have to present proof of this money (Finanzierungsnachweis) during your appointment.

There are a couple of ways you can present proof of finances — there are 3 most reliable options;

  • Blocked Account – You need approximately €11,904 – €12,500 in a blocked account to cover living expenses.
  • Sponsorship Letter – Instead of a blocked account, you can submit a formal obligation letter from someone living and working in Germany who agrees to sponsor you to cover your expenses.
  • Other Alternatives – If you won a scholarship, present the certificate stating the amount covered. You can send your parent’s income or financial asset statements.
