Eligible Programmes
The SOAS SDG Scholarship is open to students enrolled in any full-time, one-year taught Master’s programme at SOAS whose content is linked to one or more of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals. This broad eligibility makes the scholarship accessible to students across a wide range of disciplines from development studies, economics, and international relations to environmental law, global health, gender studies, and beyond, provided the programme has a clear connection to sustainable development.
Applicants must be new admissions only; that is, students starting a programme in the 2026/2027 academic year. Students already enrolled at SOAS are not eligible to apply.
Eligibility Requirements for the SOAS Sustainable Development Goal Scholarship 2026 in UK
To be considered for the SOAS Sustainable Development Goal Scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Open to both Home and Overseas fee status applicants — no nationality restriction applies
- Must be a new admission starting a programme in the 2026/27 academic year
- Must possess, or expect to be awarded, a First Class Honours degree from a UK university or its international equivalent. International applicants with a non-UK degree must demonstrate top-ranking academic performance as evidenced by strong academic references and transcripts
- Applicants with a 2:1 degree may apply but will not be given preference over First Class candidates
- Must have applied to SOAS for a Master’s programme — a formal offer of admission is not required by the scholarship deadline, but applicants must receive an unconditional offer before the scholarship panel convenes to review applications
- The scholarship does not cover pre-sessional courses
Candidate Assessment
Selection is carried out by a dedicated scholarship panel that assesses candidates on two key dimensions:
Academic Merit: The panel reviews academic performance including degree results, personal statement, references, and other relevant information submitted as part of the SOAS admissions application. A First Class Honours degree or international equivalent is the benchmark, though exceptional 2:1 candidates may be considered.
Alignment with Sustainability: Candidates are also evaluated on how strongly the subject of their chosen Master’s programme and their personal academic and professional journey are aligned with the goals of sustainability and the 17 UN SDGs. Applicants who can articulate a compelling, evidence-based vision for how their studies connect to creating sustainable solutions for a just and regenerative future will be at a significant advantage.
The scholarship panel uses both the scholarship application and the admissions application — including personal statement and academic records — as the basis for its assessment. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered under any circumstances.
Important Timeline Notes
Applicants should be aware of the following key timing considerations:
- SOAS admissions can take up to 4 weeks to be processed under normal circumstances, and up to 6 weeks during busy periods
- Applicants must have received an unconditional offer before the scholarship panel meets — this means applying for your chosen Master’s programme as early as possible is strongly recommended
- Scholarship applications open on 14 May 2026
- Results and shortlisting are expected to be completed in July 2026 at the earliest. Successful candidates will be contacted first, followed by notification to unsuccessful applicants once all awards have been allocated
