Eligibility Requirements for the Marshall Scholarship
To be eligible for a 2027 Marshall Scholarship, you must meet every one of the following conditions:
- Be a citizen of the United States of America at the time you apply
- Hold your first undergraduate degree from an accredited four-year college or university in the United States by September 2027, when you would take up the scholarship
- Have obtained a GPA of not less than 3.7 on a 4.0 scale on your undergraduate degree at the time of application. Rounded GPAs are not accepted
- Have graduated from your first undergraduate college or university after April 2024
- Not have studied for, or hold, a degree or degree-equivalent qualification from a British university, nor have taken GCSEs or A Levels at school in the UK
You are disqualified if you apply in more than one region. You are disqualified if you apply for both the one-year and two-year scholarship. No exceptions are made to these rules.
Dual citizens who hold a US passport and graduated from a four-year accredited US university are eligible. Permanent US residents who are not citizens are not eligible. US citizens who completed their undergraduate degree at a foreign university — even a highly ranked one such as McGill in Canada — are not eligible. The undergraduate degree must come from a US institution.

What the Marshall Scholarship Covers
Every Marshall Scholarship covers the following:
- Full university tuition fees at your chosen UK institution
- Cost of living expenses (stipend) for the duration of the award
- Annual book grant
- Thesis grant
- Research and daily travel grants
- Return flights between the United States and the United Kingdom

The Five Study Pathways

Two-year pathway (4)

Academic Merit

Leadership Potential
Evidence that you have led or contributed meaningfully to organisations, communities, or causes beyond your academic work. The Marshall Commission is explicit that it is looking for future leaders, not simply strong students.
Ambassadorial Potential

Is there an age limit for the Marshall Scholarship?
No. There is no age restriction. The scholarship refers to “young Americans” in its description, but the only time-based eligibility criterion is that you must have graduated from your first undergraduate degree after April 2024. Candidates over 30 are fully eligible.
Can I apply if I am already enrolled at a British university?
No. Persons already studying for or holding a British degree or degree-equivalent qualification are not eligible. If you are enrolling at a British university this coming fall, you are already ineligible.
Can I apply if I studied abroad in the UK for a year as part of my US degree?
