Imperial College London Global Development Fellowship 2026 Details
The Imperial Global Development Fellowship supports short, high impact research placements for PhD students who live and study in Least Developed Countries or Lower Middle Income Countries. The idea is simple. Imperial College London wants to help early researchers gain international experience, strengthen their studies, and develop skills that will help them contribute more to their fields and communities.
The placement can last between two and four months. Every selected student will work with their supervisor at home and a host supervisor at Imperial. The placement must begin in March 2026 and end before 31 July 2026.
The fellowship is funded by Imperial’s International Relations Office under the Global Development Hub. The goal is to support research, education and global partnerships that make a real impact in developing regions.

2026 Imperial College London Global Development Fellowship Eligibility Requirements
To qualify, you must meet all the following:
- You must be a current PhD student.
- You must hold a passport and be a permanent resident of a country listed as a Least Developed Country (LDC) or Lower Middle Income Country (LMIC) on the OECD ODA list.
- You must currently be studying for your PhD at an institution within an LDC or LMIC.
- You must be more than 12 months into your PhD by the time the placement begins.
- You must have a Letter of Support from an Imperial College academic supervisor. This letter must also be signed by the Head of Department.
- You must have a Letter of Recommendation from your current PhD supervisor.
- Your supervisor must confirm that your English is good enough to engage well during the placement.
You are not eligible if:
- You have dual British citizenship.
- You live in or study in a country that is not an LDC or LMIC.
- You are a permanent resident in a country outside the LDC or LMIC list.

2026 Imperial College London Global Development Fellowship Benefits
Selected students will receive full support for the entire placement. The fellowship covers:
- A monthly stipend of £1,900
- A £200 one-time payment when you arrive in the UK
- Return economy flight ticket
- Visa application fees and Biometrics Residence Permit
- Support for travel to visa application centres
- No bench fees or tuition fees (these are waived by Imperial departments)
Note:
Accommodation in London is not covered. Students must arrange their own housing, but guidance is provided.

To complete the application, you must prepare:
- Your background information showing how you meet eligibility (part of the application form).
- A Letter of Recommendation from your home institution, preferably from your PhD supervisor. This must confirm your skills and English ability.
- A Letter of Support from your proposed Imperial supervisor. This must be signed by the Head of Department.
