The Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship-for-Service Program is the largest education and workforce development initiative under the Department of War STEM Program. In 2023, eligibility was expanded to include incoming college freshmen with no prior college credit, extending this remarkable opportunity to high school seniors as well. Additionally, scholars awarded more than one year of funding must complete summer internships at their Sponsoring Facility, while those with one-year awards begin working for their Sponsoring Facility immediately upon graduation.

Eligibility Requirements for the Department of War (DoW) SMART Scholarship 2026 in USA
- Must be a citizen of the United States, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, or the United Kingdom
- Must be 18 years of age or older by January 1, 2027
- Must have and maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
- Must be currently pursuing, or intend to pursue in Fall 2026, a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or doctoral degree in an eligible SMART STEM discipline
- Must be planning to attend, or currently enrolled in, a regionally accredited U.S. college or university
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a Department of War security clearance (initiated by the Sponsoring Facility after award)
