Documents and References
Do not upload these directly to your scholarship application:
- Degree certificates
- Transcripts
- References
They are taken from your linked Warwick course application, which Postgraduate Admissions manages.
References
- You will see a referee section in the scholarship application, but if you are not a current Warwick student, the system sends no separate reference request.
- Postgraduate Admissions collects references through your course application and imports them for scholarship assessment.
- Tell your referees that their references will also be used for scholarship assessment. They should give relevant, evidence-based information about your capability, preparedness and potential for doctoral study.
- The reference deadline is 21 December 2026 at 16:59 GMT, two weeks after the course application deadline.
- Postgraduate Admissions cannot request references until you submit your course application and give your referee details.
Current Warwick students
The only current Warwick students who should apply through the scholarship portal are those applying for China Scholarship Council funding. They enter referee details in the scholarship application, upload any new degree certificates or transcripts, and their references are requested through the scholarship system.
Doctoral Access, Sanctuary route
Upload evidence of an eligible Home Office status directly to your scholarship application by the 10 December 2026 deadline:
- Asylum seeker: a scanned copy of your Application Registration Card (ARC), or your most recent Bail 201 letter
- Humanitarian Protection, Discretionary Leave to Remain or Limited Leave to Remain: a scanned copy of your current visa, plus a copy of the Home Office decision on your asylum application or other evidence that your visa came from an asylum claim
If you see the message “There was a problem loading this PDF” next to an imported document, ignore it. It does not affect your assessment.

Application Process for the Warwick PGR Scholarships
- Read the guidance. Study the PGR Scholarship Competency-Based Assessment Criteria and the Applicant Guidance Notes.
- Submit your course application. Use the University’s online system for research courses by the course application deadline. When asked for scholarship or funder contact information, enter the Doctoral College email: [email protected]. If you already submitted without it, that is fine.
- Wait for your ID email. Within 48 hours, you will receive an automated email with your 7-digit applicant ID and instructions to register your ITS applicant account. The Doctoral College cannot issue ID numbers.
- Register your ITS applicant account. You need it to open the scholarship system.
- Start your scholarship application. On the “Select Scholarship” page, your details and qualifications are filled in from your course application.
- Select the correct course. Your scholarship application is linked to it. If you later withdraw from or decline that course, your scholarship application is withdrawn too.
- Write your research overview. Give a brief overview of your general research area and relevant knowledge in plain English with no jargon. The assessors do not see your course application, CV or full research proposal and may not come from your discipline. A bibliography is not needed.
- Add the Pathway statement if relevant. If you also want to be considered for Doctoral Access (Pathway), explain in 300 words or less how you meet the Pathway Programme criteria.
- Review and submit. The system will not let you submit an incomplete application, and you cannot change it after you submit. You receive a confirmation email with a link, so bookmark it.
It is not usually possible to complete and submit an application in less than 36 hours, so start well before the deadline. The word limits are counted by the scholarship portal and may differ from your word processor.
How Applications Are Judged
Warwick does not use a numerical scoring matrix. Candidates are ranked by how well they match the assessment criteria, first within their department and then within their faculty.
- Department stage. The department linked to your course reviews eligible applications and nominates its strongest candidates within a limited quota. For each one, it gives a numerical ranking and a nomination statement that covers your application, the references, your capability and potential, the project, the fit with the department and the proposed supervision.
- Faculty stage. Each faculty ranks the nominated candidates and places particular emphasis on Person and Preparedness. A high department ranking does not guarantee the same place in the faculty ranking.
- Allocation panels. A separate panel for each funding stream confirms final awards and reserve lists. Panels may also consider the spread of awards across departments and faculties, and equality impact.
Must-Read: Top UK Scholarships for International Students
You are considered for every stream you are eligible for, as long as your department nominated you, you completed any extra statement, you uploaded required evidence, and neither you nor the department opted out of that stream. Being nominated or ranked does not guarantee an award.
Person and Preparedness
- Research capability
- Researcher potential
- Academic, professional and practitioner excellence. A strong professional or practitioner record can replace traditional academic qualifications
- Achievement and impact, such as research outputs, creative practice, innovation or leadership
- Readiness for doctoral study, shown by strong, evidence-based references
- Research culture and inclusion
You are not expected to meet every criterion. Assessors also look at contextual factors, structural inequalities and degree inflation trends when they judge your grades.
Project and Place
- Originality and significance
- Critical engagement with literature, theory, evidence or practice
- Research design and feasibility
- Institutional fit with Warwick’s strengths
- Supervisory alignment
- Impact and contribution
Outcome
The Doctoral College emails every applicant by 5 March 2027 to say whether you got a scholarship, were placed on a reserve list, or were unsuccessful. Do not contact the Doctoral College for your result before the release date. Because of the number of applications, individual feedback is not given.
