Makerere University and the Mastercard Foundation have renewed their partnership for the second phase of the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program, extending through 2034. For the 2025/2026 academic year, Makerere University is offering 190 Undergraduate and 11 Masterβs scholarships under the Private Sponsorship Scheme. To be eligible for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at Makerere University, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Must have applied for admission to Makerere Universityβs main campus under the Private Sponsorship Scheme for the 2025/2026 academic year in one of the prioritized undergraduate or master’s degree programs.
- Must have completed their secondary or undergraduate education in an African country.
- Should be facing financial hardships and must not be a holder of any other scholarship, including the Government of Uganda Scholarship.
- Must have demonstrated leadership potential and/or community service.
- Undergraduate applicants must:
- Be 28 years old or younger (or 32 years old or younger for refugees and persons with disabilities).
- Not have completed any undergraduate degree program.
- Hold either an advanced secondary certificate, a second-class/credit diploma or have passed Makerere Universityβs mature-age entry exam.
- Graduate applicants must:
- Be 35 years old or younger (or 40 years old or younger for refugees and persons with disabilities).
- Not be pursuing or have completed any Masterβs degree studies.
- A refugee applicant must hold a Refugee Identity Card or Family Attestation.
