Ms. Geek Africa 2026 is calling — and the theme this year is HerLens AI Solutions: Real Problems. Inclusive Solutions. Scalable Impact. Girls and young women aged 13 to 21 from Smart Africa Member States are invited to submit AI-powered solutions that address real challenges faced by women, girls, and communities across the continent. You do not need a finished product. You do not need to know how to code. You just need a bold idea and the courage to share it.

Furthermore, this is not just a competition. Selected national winners will attend a 15-day bootcamp — five days virtual and ten days in-person in Kigali, Rwanda — where they will receive mentorship, pitch training, and technical coaching from industry experts. And the finalists? They will stand on one of Africa’s biggest tech stages — the Transform Africa Summit 2026 — and pitch their ideas before Heads of State, global investors, and international media.

Ms. Geek Africa 2026 AI Competition Details
Ms. Geek Africa was originally launched in 2014 by Girls in ICT Rwanda as Ms. Geek Rwanda — a national competition designed to inspire girls to pursue STEM careers and use innovation to solve pressing development challenges. In 2017, a strategic partnership with Smart Africa transformed it into a continental platform open to all Smart Africa Member States. Today, it is one of Africa’s leading platforms for identifying, nurturing, and showcasing girl-led innovation and leadership in technology.
The 2026 theme — HerLens AI Solutions — is grounded in a simple but powerful truth: Artificial Intelligence is reshaping the world, but too often, the challenges faced by women and girls are invisible in the data, missing from the design, and left out of the solutions. This year’s challenge asks participants to change that.

Your challenge question is this: How can Artificial Intelligence be used to solve a real challenge faced by women and girls in Africa — in ways that are practical, inclusive, and scalable?
You can submit your idea as any of the following:
- A well-thought-out concept — a clear, detailed idea
- A prototype — a basic early version including mockups, demos, or a partly built tool
- A working or ready product — something already in use or close to launch

What happens after you apply:
Stage 1 — National Selection: Each Smart Africa Member State will review submissions from its nationals and select one national winner to represent the country at continental level.
Stage 2 — The Bootcamp (August 2026): Selected national winners are invited to a 15-day bootcamp — 5 days virtual and 10 days in-person in Kigali, Rwanda. During the bootcamp, participants will refine their ideas, build pitching skills, receive technical mentorship, and engage with engineers and successful innovators. On the final day, they pitch to a panel of expert judges.
Stage 3 — Transform Africa Summit 2026 (November 2026): Top solutions from the bootcamp will pitch live at the Ms. Geek Africa 2026 Final before an audience of Heads of State, First Ladies, Ministers, global investors, and international media. Winners receive top prizes and post-TAS mentorship opportunities to take their solutions further.

Eligibility Requirements for the Ms. Geek Africa 2026 AI Competition
- Must be female
- Must be aged 13 to 21 years old at the time of application
- Must be a national of a Smart Africa Member State
- Applications are individual only — group submissions are not accepted, though collaborators can be credited within the submission
- Must not be above 21 years of age at time of application — there is no requirement to be currently enrolled in school or university

Your submission package must include:
- Written submission (maximum 500 words) — in PDF or Word format — describing:
- The specific problem you want to solve
- How your AI solution will solve it
- The technology you are using or plan to use
- Your key stakeholders and target users
- How the solution will be shared and scaled
- Graphic drawing, sketch, or UI mockup — showing how your solution works and an example of the user interface (can be hand-drawn, or designed in PowerPoint, Canva, Figma, or any tool you prefer) — submitted as an image or PDF
- Short personal note (maximum 150 words) — telling the judges who you are, why you care about this problem, and what winning Ms. Geek Africa would mean to you
- Contact details — full name, age, country, school or institution (if applicable), email address, and phone number with country code

How to Apply for the Ms. Geek Africa 2026 AI Competition
- Confirm you are female, aged 13–21, and a national of a Smart Africa Member State — check the full list of Smart Africa Member States on the official Smart Africa website at smartafrica.org.
- Identify the real problem you want to solve — think about the women and girls around you, in your community, in your country. What challenge keeps showing up? Start there.
- Develop your AI-powered solution. It does not need to be finished or coded. A clear idea, a sketch, and honest thinking about how AI could help is enough to get started. The bootcamp will help you develop it further.
- Write your 500-word submission clearly addressing the five required points — the problem, your AI solution, the technology, your target users, and how you plan to scale it.
- Create your graphic, sketch, or UI mockup showing how your solution works — use whatever tool you are comfortable with, including pen and paper.
- Write your 150-word personal note honestly and from the heart. Tell them who you are and why this matters to you.
- Compile your full submission package and email everything to [email protected] with the correct subject line: Ms. Geek Africa 2026 — [Your Full Name] — [Your Country].
- Submit before the individual application deadline of 10 June 2026 — late submissions will not be considered.

Application Process FAQ
Do I need to know how to code to apply? No. You do not need to be a programmer. Many past winners started with just an idea. What matters most is your problem-solving mindset and creativity. The bootcamp will help you develop your solution further.
What if I am not sure my idea is “AI enough”? If your solution uses or could use chatbots, voice assistants, image or video recognition, prediction models, recommendation systems, machine learning, natural language processing, or smart automation — it counts. Be honest about what your solution does today and what it could do with the right support.
Can I work on my submission with a team? Only one person — the applicant — will represent the entry. But you can absolutely brainstorm with friends, mentors, and family. Just credit them in your submission.
What if I already have a startup or product? Even better. You can apply with a working solution and use the platform to scale it further.
Do I have to be in school? No. Whether you are in school, in university, out of school, or self-taught — you are welcome to apply, as long as you meet the age and nationality criteria.
Will my idea be safe? Yes. Your submission will only be reviewed by judges and the Ms. Geek Africa team. Your intellectual property is respected — but avoid sharing trade secrets you would not want disclosed, as a precaution.
I missed the deadline. Can I still apply? Unfortunately, no. The deadline is firm. Mark your calendar for Ms. Geek Africa 2027.
