About the Ms. Geek Africa AI Competition
Ms. Geek Africa began in 2014 as Ms. Geek Rwanda — a national competition launched by Girls in ICT Rwanda to encourage girls to pursue STEM careers and apply innovation to real development problems. In 2017, a partnership with Smart Africa expanded it into a continental programme open to all Smart Africa Member States. It is now one of Africa’s leading platforms for identifying and showcasing girl-led technology innovation and leadership.
The 2026 theme is HerLens AI Solutions: Real Problems. Inclusive Solutions. Scalable Impact. The theme is built on a direct observation: Artificial Intelligence is reshaping the world, but the challenges faced by women and girls are too often absent from the data, missing from the design, and left out of the solutions. This year’s competition asks participants to change that.
The challenge question is: How can Artificial Intelligence be used to solve a real challenge faced by women and girls in Africa — in ways that are practical, inclusive, and scalable?
You can respond to that question with any of the following:
- A well-thought-out concept — a clear, detailed idea with no prototype yet
- A prototype — mockups, demos, or a partly built tool
- A working or near-launch product already in use
How the Competition Works
Stage 1 — National Selection: Each Smart Africa Member State reviews submissions from its nationals and selects one national winner to represent the country at continental level.
Stage 2 — Bootcamp (August 2026): National winners attend a 15-day bootcamp — 5 days virtual and 10 days in-person in Kigali, Rwanda. Participants refine their ideas, build pitching skills, and receive technical mentorship from engineers and industry experts. On the final day, they pitch to a panel of judges.
Stage 3 — Transform Africa Summit 2026 (November 2026): Top solutions from the bootcamp pitch live at the Ms. Geek Africa 2026 Final before Heads of State, First Ladies, Ministers, global investors, and international media. Winners receive top prizes and post-summit mentorship to develop their solutions further.

Eligibility Requirements
To apply, you must meet all of the following:
- You must be female
- You must be aged 13 to 21 at the time of application
- You must be a national of a Smart Africa Member State — check the full list at smartafrica.org
- You must apply as an individual — group submissions are not accepted, though you may credit collaborators within your submission
- You do not need to be currently enrolled in school or university
Required Documents
Your full submission package must include all four of the following components:
- 500-word written submission in PDF or Word format, covering: the specific problem you want to solve; how your AI solution addresses it; the technology you are using or plan to use; your key stakeholders and target users; and how the solution will be shared and scaled
- Graphic drawing, sketch, or UI mockup showing how your solution works and an example of the user interface — hand-drawn, or created in PowerPoint, Canva, Figma, or any tool you prefer — submitted as an image or PDF
- 150-word personal note telling the judges who you are, why this problem matters to you, and what winning Ms. Geek Africa would mean to you
- Contact details — full name, age, country, school or institution (if applicable), email address, and phone number with country code

How to Apply
- Confirm you are female, aged 13 to 21, and a national of a Smart Africa Member State. Verify your country’s membership at smartafrica.org.
- Identify the real problem you want to solve. Think about the women and girls around you — in your home, community, or country. Start with a challenge you have seen or experienced directly.
- Develop your AI-powered solution. It does not need to be coded or finished. A clear idea, a sketch, and honest thinking about how AI could help is enough. The bootcamp exists to help you develop it further.
- Write your 500-word submission, addressing all five required points: the problem, your solution, the technology, your target users, and your scaling plan.
- Create your graphic, sketch, or UI mockup using any tool available to you — including pen and paper.
- Write your 150-word personal note honestly. Tell the judges who you are and why this problem matters to you.
- Compile all four components into one submission package and email everything to [email protected] with the correct subject line.
- Submit before June 10, 2026. Late submissions will not be accepted under any circumstances.
